Leadership and STEAM

STEAM and Dream Liberation Labs work to close the STEM exposure gap by offering youth culturally affirming, hands-on learning experiences and mentorship that spark curiosity, build confidence, and empower them to design a better future. At Legacy, scholars explore dynamic labs in healthcare, engineering, technology, environmental science, and math. These immersive experiences nurture their natural curiosity and cultivate the next generation of changemakers, equipping them to lead in their communities and beyond.

Ivana Miles Beauty Academy’s Cosmetology Camp is designed to empower middle and high school students, especially young women of color, through a healing-centered, culturally responsive cosmetology education. The program blends technical training with career exploration, entrepreneurship, and leadership development to inspire lasting transformation. Through this curriculum, students build confidence, develop valuable skills, and explore pathways to business ownership and self-empowerment.

The Dream Builders Youth Voice Initiative is a transformative, school-based program for middle school students who are ready to amplify their voices, deepen their leadership, and reimagine their school environment. Rooted in the foundational practices of the Dream Builders Camp and the Neighborhood Nurturers Program, the initiative centers joy, justice, and youth power as cornerstones of a thriving school culture.

Through student-led action projects and campaigns that address school and community needs, Legacy scholars learn to celebrate their voices and visions. Guided by training in peer-led restorative and wellness circles, they cultivate confidence, strengthen connection, and expand their capacity for leadership.

K-Piano Twice a week, Legacy’s third- and fourth-grade scholars discover the joy of music through the K-Piano program. Each participating student has access to their own keyboard and laptop, learning to play the piano under the guidance of an online instructor. Beyond musical enrichment, participation in K-Piano has been shown to enhance academic performance, particularly contributing to improved math scores through the development of pattern recognition, focus, and discipline.

The S.T.E.M. LEGO Club is a hands-on, interactive program that encourages 1st – 4th grade scholars to explore concepts in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through creative LEGO building and problem-solving challenges. Scholars collaborate on design projects that strengthen their teamwork, critical thinking, and innovation skills, all while having fun bringing their ideas to life.

The Karaoke Club provides a fun and encouraging space for 1st – 4th-grade scholars to sing their favorite songs, discover new music, and showcase their talents. Through performance and participation, scholars gain confidence, self-expression, and cognitive growth, all while building a supportive community that celebrates creativity and joy.

Legacy Scholar Council fosters leadership, responsibility, and community engagement among students through democratic processes and active participation in school events and improvement initiatives. Council members are nominated and elected by their middle school peers, giving scholars a meaningful voice in shaping the school experience.

Through this leadership opportunity, scholars develop skills in communication, collaboration, and civic responsibility, while representing their classmates and contributing to a positive, inclusive school culture.

The Scholar Ambassador Program is a leadership development opportunity designed for scholars in grades 6–8 who demonstrate excellence, responsibility, and a commitment to representing our school community with pride. Selected scholars are trained to serve as official school ambassadors, gaining valuable experience, confidence, and leadership skills by participating in a range of activities. These include engaging with community and industry leaders, mentors, influencers, Legacy board members, and school supporters.
Participation in the Scholar Ambassador Program prepares students to be effective communicators, compassionate leaders, and active citizens equipped to make a positive impact both within and beyond the Legacy community.
